Most window repairs are done in situ from inside with minimal disruption. Your home will be made secure and weather proof overnight for repairs taking more than a day.
Original sash windows are at least 130 years old with many being much older therefore, its preferable to restore them rather than replace them. Complete replacement new sash windows just dont have the charm of old sash windows, after all they are antiques and should be restored.
Original sash windows are made from a durable pine such as Pitch Pine or Douglas Fir, wet rot is usually localised and slow to spread making restoration a viable option. With the exception of sills, new wood should be spliced into rotten areas and jointed in where possible rather than replacing the whole piece. Often its possible to use reclaimed wood from salvaged sash windows as its much more durable than modern kiln dried wood and true to the original construction. Save as much original glass as possible as the ripple affect from its imperfections give a sparkle when clean you will never get from new perfect glass!
